Other Advice

  • Have starred (*) items accessible.
  • For maximum warmth and adaptability, you should dress in layers.  Choose your jacket so that once you have long underwear, T-shirt, long sleeved shirt, and a sweater on, the jacket will keep you comfortable and warm at the coldest temperature you think may occur.  That way you can add or remove layers and always remain comfortable and prepared.
  • Place heavy items near the top of your pack.  This will keep the weight above your center of gravity.
  • Count on 1 gallon (4 L) of water per person, per day. This includes water for washing up and in meals.  Try to drink 2 quarts (2 L) of fluids during the day. Dehydration sucks.

This list is based in part on that given in the
Boy Scouts of America Camping Merit Badge book.
